Term 2 Week 10
Dear Parents,
Thank you again to everyone who came to Parents' Day!
Grade 6 and 7 threw us a party this week for raising the most food for the food drive in the school! We had a lot of fun!
English:
We learned about irregular plural nouns and made a poster of some examples of words which do not follow the normal rule. We read some poetry about ecosystems and human impact. We then worked with a partner to create our own poems about a chosen biome. We read news articles about the destruction of ecosystems and practiced creating our own titles.
Maths:
We practiced reading information from and creating bar, line, and pie graphs. We noticed that using a ruler made the graphs more clear and easier to read, and we practiced using the lines in our notebooks to help us write the numbers evenly. We also discovered that if our page is too small for the graph, we can use skip counting to draw the graph and choose a suitable scale. We also practiced analysing graphs and writing statements about the data we worked with.
Unit of Inquiry:
We continued to take action and went to the park and collected every single piece of trash. We then sorted the trash into different bags to allow us to recycle. We explored further by making a bar graph of the data we collected, and that allowed us to make conclusions of what kinds of trash people drop, what is the most common type, etc. This gave us some ideas about even more action we could take. We also watched an episode of The Magic School Bus* about the destruction of a wetland biome, took notes, and discussed the impact of human construction.
*By the way, if you want your child to watch TV in English at home, I would highly recommend The Magic School Bus. The students like it because it is funny, and it is really educational and sends a good message about a range of topics. You can find the old series on Youtube, and the modern series on Netflix.
Have a good weekend,
Ms. Stacy.
