Term 3 Week 1

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great break! I heard that Grade 3 were very well behaved and had a lot of fun with Ms. Aida!

English: We began reading "Happy New Year Around the World" for shared reading. We compared how different cultures celebrate New Years, which allowed us to become more knowledgeable and open-minded. We reviewed elements of non-fiction texts, such as table of contents and glossary. We made predictions about new vocabulary words and used the glossary to find definitions. We also continued learning our spellings words and improving our reading abilities with level books from Raz Kids.

Maths: This week we measured time. We measured the length of time it took to do a variety of activities. We explored different scenarios, using the starting time and finishing time to work out how long they took, or the starting time and how long they took to find the finishing time. We also had fun estimating how many jewels were in our reward jar. We wrote down or estimates, counted the jewels, and shared if our guesses were close or far to the actual amount.

Unit of Inquiry: We focused on our third line of inquiry "effects of major economic transformations". We unpacked what that means using a dictionary. We read books and watched videos to imagine how people exchanged goods and services in the past, and wrote a diary entry for a typical day in the life of someone in the past. We looked at industrialisation and major inventions, such as the steam engine, and explored the effect this change had on people and the environment. We shared our ideas and understanding in our notebooks. We also read "Homer Price: The doughnuts" by Robert McCloskey, and sketched our own ideas for a never-ending machine.

Mathletics: It seems that some activities do not work on smart phones. While there is an app, it is unavailable in Japan. Mr. Ugur has contacted Mathletics to ask if they can make it available here. I will update you if it does.

Reminders:
-There is no school on Monday.
-If your child needs a new notebook, please buy the notebooks which have the guided lines for writing, and square boxes for maths. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Stacy.
