Term 3 Week 3

Dear Parents,

We had our big IB-PYP inspection at the start of the week. I was happy to see that Grade 3 students were polite and friendly to our two visitors, and were excellent at communicating what we are doing in school. I was very proud of our class! :)

English: We finished reading "Brad Needs a Budget" for shared reading. We made a lot of connections to our unit and our prior knowledge. We noticed the sound that "dg" makes and thought of similar words. We enjoyed reading discussion cards and talking in groups about the book. We used vocabulary words like "budget, allowance, spending, savings" to write a response journal entry. We looked at some simple sentences and found that every sentence needs a subject.

Maths: This week allowed for a lot of transdisciplinary learning. We practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing money. This helped us to decide how much we should sell our products for. We used real money to buy materials in a shop. It was fun to get to practice our maths skills in a real-life situation. We also subtracted our spending to find out our profit. This gave us a chance to reflect and see what changes we could make to earn more money. We also used our research skills to collect important data-like how many products we are making and how many students are in each class. This gave us an insight into the supply and demand for our products.

Unit of Inquiry: We began planning and preparing for our summative assessment: a classroom market. After doing some online research, we brainstormed which goods students in our school might buy. We split into teams based on who was interested in making similar products. We went shopping to Seria to buy the materials needed. We then worked in our teams to make the products. We also began thinking of ways we can advertise. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and had to change our original plan. We delayed the market day for a few days. This gave us an opportunity to experience some real life problems that a business might face, and how best to solve it!

Reminders: Photo Day is Tuesday, January 29th.

Thank you,
Ms. Stacy.
