Term 1 Week 1

Dear Parents,

We had a great first week of Grade 3! We got to know each other by making a poster titled "All About Me" and making a presentation to the class. We got to know our new classroom routines. We worked in teams to create our class "Essential Agreement". These are like the rules of our class that we need to follow. The students had some great ideas!

In English class, we read "Chicken Little". We practiced making predictions about the story by guessing what we thought the book was about, and what would happen next. We drew pictures and wrote sentences about the problem and solution in the story. We found quotation marks in the book, and practiced writing using quotation marks. We learned what a synonym is, and thought of our own examples.

In Maths class, we practiced reading and understanding four-digit numbers. We broke each digit down into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. We used this expanded form of the numbers to further understand what the number means. We worked on putting them in order of smallest to largest. We then compared numbers by writing number sentences using greater than (>) and less than (<).

In Unit of Inquiry, we began our first unit of the year "Who we are". We began by looking at our central idea and making sense of the vocabulary. Then, we shared what we already knew about body systems by drawing pictures and labeling as much as we could. The students worked on their drawing skills and drew and labelled the main parts of the human body. We watched a video about the digestive system and shared what we thought was interesting. We came up with our own questions and added them to the "Wonder Wall" so that we can remember to find the answers to them as we inquire into body systems. We did a science experiment to help us to understand how the digestive system breaks down food, takes the nutrients we need, and gets rid of waste. After, we wrote about what we learned from the experiment. We all agreed that the experiment was "fun" and "disgusting"!
