Term 1 Week 2

Dear Parents,

In Morning Meeting, we focused on the Learner Profile Attribute balanced. We made a poster to show how we can be balanced academically, emotionally, and physically. We spoke about the ways that we could be more balanced in our lives. We read the book "ish", and talked about how important it is to relax and not feel stressed.

In English class, we read some articles to help us find the answer to a key question: what makes someone a good team member? We read two fictional stories called "The Softball Team" and "The Obstacle Course", and used examples from the stories to help answer our key question. We also learned how to look up words in a dictionary to help increase our vocabulary and understanding. We read "My Bones" to connect to our inquiry and find the answers to some of our questions about the skeletal system.

In Maths class, we looked at odd and even numbers. We learned about rounding numbers to make it easier to count big numbers. We looked at number lines to understand this concept. We also practiced drawing number lines neatly using a ruler and the correct scale. We played games to practice rounding to the nearest ten. We began to look at rounding to the nearest hundred.

In Unit of Inquiry, we inquired into another body system: the skeletal system. We began by brainstorming everything we knew about bones. We thought that bones might be used for protection. We watched a video to see what happened to Harry Potter when he lost his bones, and decided that bones are also used for support and movement. We pieced together the different parts of a skeleton and looked at the types of different bones. There were a lot of questions from the students. They researched the answers to their questions in books from the library. We looked at the structure of a bone, and began making a bone model.
