Unit 5 - How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea: Personal experiences provide inspiration for an artist to create

Lines of Inquiry:

Key concepts: perspective, form, causation

Perspective: Sharing personal experiences

Form: Art and inspirations

Causation: How experiences affect creations

Related concepts: values, similarities, impact

Learner profile: communicators, open-minded, risk-takers

Approaches to Learning: thinking skills, communication skills

This unit we learned about art forms, and the connection between artists experiences and their art works. We worked hard developing our communication and thinking skills, and making connections between our own life and our art.

We created characters and wrote our own scripts for our end of year performance, creating props and costumes.

English

In English we continued working on our narrative writing, looking at artworks for inspiration.  We also worked on our persuasive writing by preparing for weekly debates.  Grade 3 was very excited to debate each other, and were eager to rebut each other.

Math

In math we worked on space, shape, and position. We explored parallel and perpendicular lines, as well as angles.  We explored our classroom finding example of lines and angles. We reviewed 2D shapes and Grade 3 really enjoyed identifying nets of 3D shapes, as well as making 3D shapes using toothpicks and clay. We then moved only direction and created our own town from 3D shapes, and learned how to read and give directions using maps.

Spirit week was a huge success! Grade 3 really got into dressing up for each days theme.
